September Family Meal Plan + Free Printable Calendar
One of the best ways I’ve found to simplify dinner each week is by planning our meals for the entire month.
With fall right around the corner, I’m making a few changes to our usual weekly meal themes this month, too. September is that in-between season when we’re still enjoying some warm-weather favorites, but I’m also ready to start bringing casseroles, soups, and cozy comfort foods back into the rotation.
Do we follow our meal plan perfectly? Not always! Life happens, schedules change, and sometimes we swap meals around. With school and sports starting back up, we’re also heading into a busy season of practices, games, and meets. I do my best to look ahead at our schedule and plan our meals around those nights, but sometimes that means moving Tuesday’s dinner to Wednesday or swapping a more involved meal for something quick and easy.
That’s actually one of the reasons I like having the whole month planned ahead of time. Even when we need to move things around, I already have a list of meals to choose from instead of starting from scratch at 5:00 and trying to figure out what’s for dinner. It helps with decision fatigue, cuts down on last-minute grocery trips or takeout, and helps us stay on budget.
Each month I share our family’s real meal plan along with a free blank calendar you can customize for your own family. This is the plan I’m actually using, but it’s meant to be flexible. Some weeks we’ll follow it exactly, and other weeks we’ll move things around to make it work with real life.
Feel free to follow our September menu exactly, borrow a few dinner ideas, or download the blank calendar and make it completely your own. The goal isn’t to follow a meal plan perfectly—it’s to have a plan in place that makes feeding your family a little easier.
Why I Plan an Entire Month at a Time
Planning a month’s worth of meals has completely changed the way I manage our kitchen.
It helps me:
- Reduce decision fatigue
- Save time during busy weeks
- Make fewer grocery trips – I usually do one big order for my non perishables and then my produce or fresh meats I’ll get closer to when they’re needed.
- Use ingredients more efficiently
- Plan around our family schedule
- Reduce food waste by intentionally scheduling leftovers
Instead of creating a brand-new meal plan every week, I spend a little time once each month and enjoy the benefits all month long.

Our Weekly Meal Themes
One of my favorite meal-planning tricks is assigning each day a theme. It narrows down our choices without making dinner feel repetitive. As we head into fall, I’ve changed our usual themes around a little to make room for more casseroles, soups, and cozy dinners while still keeping plenty of flexibility.
Monday – Breakfast for Dinner
This one isn’t going anywhere! Pancakes, waffles, biscuits and gravy, crepes, and other breakfast favorites make an easy Monday night dinner.
Tuesday – Taco (or Tater) Tuesday
Mexican-inspired meals, tater tot casseroles, nachos, burritos, and other Taco or Tater Tuesday favorites fit here.
Wednesday – Whatever Wednesday
This is still our flexible night, but you’ll notice more casseroles and comfort foods making their way onto Wednesdays as the weather cools down. It’s also where I put new recipes I want to try, family favorites we want again, or anything that doesn’t quite fit another theme.
Thursday – Pasta Night
Spaghetti, creamy chicken pasta, Alfredo, lasagna, baked pasta, and other noodle dishes make Thursday one of the easiest nights to fill.
Friday – Family Dinner
Friday is our family dinner night, so I don’t have to plan a specific meal for this one.
Saturday – Soup or Salad Saturday
This is one of our changes for fall! As the weather cools down, Saturdays are perfect for soups, chili, chicken and dumplings, and other cozy meals. On warmer weekends, we can switch it up with a salad instead.
Sunday – Grill or Leftovers
We’re not quite ready to put the grill away just because fall is coming! Sundays give us the option to grill or smoke something while the weather is nice. When we have plenty of food left from the week, we’ll skip cooking altogether and have leftovers instead. It’s an easy way to use what we already have and cut down on food waste.
