This easy homemade white country gravy is rich, creamy, and perfectly peppery. Made with simple pantry staples, it comes together in about 15 minutes and is perfect for biscuits, chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes, eggs, and more.

Ingredients

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
  • 2½ cups whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan or skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the flour and whisk until completely combined. Cook for 1–2 minutes, whisking frequently, without allowing the flour mixture to brown.
  3. Slowly pour in about ½ cup of the milk while whisking constantly until smooth.
  4. Gradually whisk in the remaining milk.
  5. Add the salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  6. Cook over medium to medium-low heat for 4–6 minutes, whisking frequently, until the gravy is smooth and thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
  7. Remove from the heat. Taste and adjust the salt and pepper as desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For thinner gravy: Whisk in additional milk, a little at a time, until it reaches your desired consistency.
  • For thicker gravy: Continue cooking for another 1–2 minutes.
  • For more pepper flavor: Increase the black pepper to ¾ teaspoon.
  • The gravy will continue to thicken slightly as it cools. Add a splash of milk when reheating if needed.
  • Whole milk gives the gravy the creamiest consistency, but 2% milk can also be used.
