This easy homemade chocolate milk mix is a simple pantry staple made with cocoa powder, sugar, powdered milk, and a pinch of salt. Stir it into cold milk for a quick homemade alternative to store-bought chocolate milk powder, or add to vanilla ice cream for an extra sweet treat!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup powdered milk
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch, optional

Instructions

  1. Add the granulated sugar, cocoa powder, powdered milk, salt, and optional cornstarch to a large mixing bowl.
  2. Whisk the ingredients together until the mixture is evenly combined and no visible streaks remain.
  3. Transfer the chocolate milk mix to an airtight container or glass jar.
  4. Store in a cool, dry pantry for up to 6 months.

To Make Chocolate Milk

  • Add 2 tablespoons of the homemade chocolate milk mix to 1 cup of cold milk.
  • Stir or shake until fully combined. Add more mix to taste for a stronger chocolate flavor.

Notes

  • Sift the cocoa powder before mixing if it contains large lumps.
  • For the smoothest texture, pulse the finished mixture briefly in a food processor or blender.
  • Dutch-process cocoa powder will create a darker, richer chocolate flavor.
  • Natural unsweetened cocoa powder will give the mix a more traditional chocolate milk flavor.
  • Cornstarch is optional, but it can help absorb moisture and reduce clumping during storage.
  • Stirring the powder into a small splash of milk first can help it dissolve more easily. Once smooth, add the remaining milk.
  • Always use a clean, dry spoon when scooping the mix from the container.
