Learn how to make homemade baking powder with just three simple pantry ingredients. This ½ cup batch is perfect for stocking your Kitchen Basics cabinet and works just like store-bought baking powder.

Ingredients

  • 4 TBSP cream of tartar
  • 2 TBSP baking soda
  • 2 TBSP cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Add the cream of tartar, baking soda, and cornstarch to a dry mixing bowl.

  2. Whisk thoroughly with a balloon whisk until completely combined and no streaks remain.

  3. Transfer to an airtight container and store in a cool, dry place.

Notes

  • The cornstarch helps prevent clumping and extends shelf life. Do not omit if storing.

  • This recipe is easily scalable, just be sure to keep your ratios 2:1:1.
  • To test freshness, stir 1 tsp baking powder into ½ cup hot water. It should bubble immediately.

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 3–6 months.

  • This recipe can be doubled or halved while keeping the same 2:1:1 ratio.
