This easy garlic butter rice is a simple, flavorful side dish made with toasted rice, fresh garlic, butter, and savory broth. The rice cooks up light and fluffy with rich buttery flavor, making it the perfect side for chicken, steak, seafood, or roasted vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup long-grain white rice
  • 2 TBSP butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely minced
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 TBSP fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs mostly clear. This removes excess surface starch so the rice cooks fluffy instead of sticky.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant. Do not let the garlic brown.
  4. Add the rice to the pan and stir to coat each grain in the garlic butter. Toasting the rice briefly helps build flavor and keeps the grains separate.
  5. Pour in the chicken broth, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil.
  6. Reduce heat to low, cover the saucepan, and simmer for 15–18 minutes until the rice is tender and the liquid has been absorbed.
  7. Remove from heat and let the rice sit covered for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork before serving and stir in chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Toasting the rice before adding liquid is what gives this rice its light texture and deeper flavor.

  • Chicken broth adds more flavor than water, but vegetable broth can also be used.
